What is the Indiana Microschool Network?

The Indiana Microschool Network, founded in 2023, is a statewide coalition that supports grassroots, private microschools across Indiana. The network exists to strengthen and connect the growing community of innovative, learner-centered educators and founders who are reimagining education on a local level.
Through community building, professional development, and resource sharing, the Indiana Microschool Network empowers microschool founders and educators to thrive. Together, we work to increase awareness, advocacy, and support for microschools and the families they serve throughout Indiana.
Our mission is to ensure that every microschool founder feels connected, equipped, and supported as part of a collaborative movement shaping the future of education in Indiana.
What is a microschool?
A microschool is a small, student-centered learning community that offers a personalized approach to education. Typically serving 5 to 150 students, microschools prioritize flexibility, creativity, and meaningful relationships. They often combine the best elements of homeschooling, private education, and modern innovation to meet the unique needs of each learner.
Microschools vary in structure—some follow traditional grade levels while others group students by ability or interest. Many emphasize project-based learning, mastery-based progression, or real-world experiences over standardized testing. Classes are usually led by a teacher, guide, or mentor who knows each student well and adapts instruction to their pace and goals.
Because microschools are small by design, they can foster a strong sense of community, safety, and belonging. They operate in diverse settings—homes, storefronts, community centers, churches, or dedicated buildings—and may be independent or part of a larger network.
In Indiana, microschools are reimagining education by empowering families and educators to build learning environments that work. Whether serving students who need extra support, crave a challenge, or seek a more values-aligned education, microschools offer families a flexible and innovative option that centers students and inspires lifelong learning.
